Chapter 24

WE DON’T STOP AS WE ride alongside the tracks, only ten to twenty feet away, which feels like we’re almost touching them. The Bullet is long gone, and I’m starting to doubt our decision to follow it. We could be heading north already. This detour will either get us captured or give us the break we desperately need. I lift my head back and then forward, stretching my neck to relieve the tension that has been building up.

Zeke is gripping the handles so tight that his knuckles are white. I look down at my own hands and see the same. It’s not only from the grip but they’re also chapped from the sun and the sand. Zeke’s head is laser-focused ahead; I can’t see his eyes, but I imagine his expression a mixture of determination and uncertainty. Though maybe I’m projecting my own feelings onto him.

He must feel me watching him because he turns to look at me. We’ve been following these tracks for what feels like hours and the lack of change in the landscape makes me wonder if we’re caught in a loop. The sandy, light-colored dirt is speckled with randomly placed rocks, boulders, and dry plants that could turn into tumbleweeds at any second. We’ve passed several tumbleweeds along the way, dancing and bobbing to their own beat across the desert. He turns his head back to the road ahead, and I do the same.

Finally, the station comes into view. The Bullet is still there and we both slow down. Even though we’re still pretty far away, we don’t know anything about the danger we may face. Sweat is beading on my face, I need to tear off this helmet. I come to a stop and rip the helmet off my head, I feel like I can’t breathe. It takes Zeke a second to realize that I’ve stopped, he turns and backtracks.

“What’s our plan now?” I ask as if he’s had a plan all along. I hate this. I just wanted to ride through the secluded mountains and had hoped to avoid any contact with the Ghosts.

“Let’s ride south a bit so we’re out of sight, then get closer.”

“And then what? We’ll be seen.” I’m fully regretting this now.

“We don’t know who’s operating this train, if we don’t try to get closer we’ll never know. What if it’s our people?”

“Zeke!” I shout. Why is he being so ignorant, or is it innocent? “Our entire world was taken over, the Bullet wasn’t exempt from that, I guarantee you.”

“Damn it, what the hell do you want to do then? If you think you have the answers, just lead the way.”

I don’t know why we’re fighting. We might be the only free people on Earth and all we can do is shout. I shake my head and lean forward on the Cheetah, feeling the heat radiate off of the dark metal. We can’t ride these to the pyramids so if we’re changing our plans then we need to get on that train.
